Hello again good sirs,

I was curious if anyone had experience in using the facebook "share" functionality within their Smith Cart webstores?

My website sells electric guitars, and the ability to share a product on facebook would be HUGE!

Is there any way to share a product that is being view on the product details page? Anyone ever experiment with this? I know Facebook looks for specific tags, in order to know what to share when the share button is clicked.

Thanks!

Alex

Hi Alex,
Yes, starting in v4.94 Smith Cart has a built in share bar on the product details page that will allow users to share your products with friends using facebook, twitter, google plus and email a friend. To enable the share bar go into the product details module settings and check the checkbox titled "Show Share Bar".

We also just released the Smith Share Bar a seperate module that can be placed on any page in your portal and has additional social networking share buttons for you ecommerce site.

Hope this helps!

Kevin, thanks for the reply.

I am curious about the share module. As it is, there are many free methods of adding sharing functionality to a ProductDetials module page. However, it seems that when I attempt to share a product while on that specific product's "product details" page, Facebook does not recognize my Product title, description, or thumbnail tags. It instead just displays the absolute url for the page, which in Smith cart can be gastly long.

I know that Facebook defaults to display the url when a page does not supply the correct tags for Facebook to use in generating it's titles and descriptions. Has this functionality been added since 4.93? Does the module handle this problem?

Thanks,
Alex

I did a bit of searching and found the following page tags that facebook uses to generate the content it shares
<meta property="og:title" content="AddThis Tour" />
<meta property="og:description" content="Watch the AddThis Tour video." />
<meta property="og:image" content="http://i2.ytimg.com/vi/1F7DKyFt5pY/default.jpg" />
<meta property="og:video" content="http://www.youtube.com/v/1F7DKyFt5pY&fs=1" />
<meta property="og:video:width" content="560" />
<meta property="og:video:height" content="340" />
<meta property="og:video:type" content="application/x-shockwave-flash" />
Have any of these been implemented into Smith Cart? Is there any way to integrate Facebook sharing?

Alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the info!

I believe that the Share button has been deprecated in favor of the Like button, and will no longer be supported. The Like button is now recommend whenever possible to drive maximum traffic to your apps.

The best way for Facebook to recognize your Product title, description, or thumbnail tags would be to copy the URL of the Product from the ProsuctDetails page and paste it into your status and your Product info and images will then be "Shared" and the Product title, description, or thumbnail tags will be displayed.

The Smith ShareBar uses the Like function to share Products URL however the ability to display the Product title, description, or thumbnails is not currently supported however I do think it would be useful to add this ability so I'll add this to our Ehancement Requests forum.

If you have budget in your project and would like to sponsor a portion of the development we can provide you with a fixed quote to move this into programming. Please submit a quote request at the following link: http://www.smith-consulting.com/servi...

Thanks,

Hi Alex,

I was going through some of our older bugs in our Bug Tracker system and came across this reported issue with the Facebook Share ( Bug: 173 ) and I wanted to follow up with an update. I tested for this issue in the latest release (7.14) and am not able to replicate the issue.
