Hi David,

The calculated rates for UPS shipping don't seem to reflect my actual costs. For example, a shipment from 75069 to 85379 calculated to be $11.11, actual cost breakdown is this:

- Ground Residential: $9.06

- Residential Surcharge: $2.05

- Deliveray Area Surchage: $2.40

- Declared Value xxx: $1.80

- Fuel Surcharge: $0.54

- Total: $15.87

How does the calculator work? And is there a way to update/tweak it?

Thanks,

Walter

The cart calls the UPS shipping calculator using their API and passes the ship method the user chooses and the from/to shipping zip. In your example below how did you get the shipping costs? Did you use the shipping calculator on the UPS website https://wwwapps.ups.com/ctc/request or are you using your statement from UPS. If you are coming up like 4 or 5 dollars short on shipping you can add a 5 dollar handling charge in the cart settings and check "combine shipping and handling" and the cart will add the handling cost to the shipping cost to supplement the shipping cost.

Actual values are from UPS invoices, and yeah they are 4 or 5 dollars more than the store quoted. I wish there was just a way to pad the shipping costs by a few dollars. Internet users these days commonly consider "Handling fees" as an arbitrary nickle-and-dime technique; I really don't want to go that route.

Thats what the combine shipping and handling checkbox in the cart settings is for it combines shipping and handling to a single line item so users dont know you are charging a handling cost. Additionally, you could modify the cart.ascx file in the \desktopmodules\smith.buynow folder to just say "Shipping" instead of "Shipping and Handling"

But the drop-down to pick the shipping option does not reflect the Handling fee even when this is checked. So that is a really confusing thing to the user. They think they are picking a certain rate, but then they are charged more on the summary page...

This is true if they were really paying attention they would notice you added a handling cost to the shipping. All the other screens in the checkout display the total shipping with the handling added as a single line item including the confirmation email. In the new cart build you have the option of using custom shipping methods where you could configure shipping costs by ship method yourself to ensure you are not losing money on shipping.
