I was able to replicate this. Our cart supports custom product attributes and product bundles that enable your to have the same product configured differently. We are adding the iitems to the cart as seperate items to support this requirement. I agree that if the product is the same sku and it doesnt have different custom attributes or bundles that the qty should increment rather than adding as a sperate item. We will add this to the the dev list.
