Search Bar too strict?

Is there some sort of option to make the search criteria less strict or is that pretty set in stone? I'm just curious.

In the latest version of the cart v3.81 the search bar does a full wild card search on the keyword you type in. For example if you type in "Shirt" the cart will search on "*Shirt*" on the following fields:
