After upgrading our test site to 4.99 we are having issues with inventory management for variants on the add to cart page.

Here are the new options the settings page gives you for inventory control:

 

 

 

If 'Enforce Inventory Management on Add To Cart' is ticked the customer is still allowed to select and add to their cart a variant which is out of stock. The customer then has to fill in their details and select a shipping method in their cart and click continue before the message "Product" is currently out of stock, please remove the product from your cart to checkout appears at the top of the page.

This is a general message covering all variants of that item, so if a customer had bought a large and small versions of a product 'A' and small was out of stock they would think that they had to remove the large version too.

Why does an 'out of stock' message not appear when a customer selects an out of stock variant? Or simply have the module remove that variant option until it is back in stock?

Surely the two 'Enforce Inventory' options are exactly the same?

Hi Rich,

The Enable Inventory Management on Add To Cart option will disable the "Add To Cart" button on the Product Listing page when product quantity on hand reaches zero and will also display the following popup message:



The Enable Inventory Management on Cart Page option will display "Product is currently out of stock, please remove the product from your cart to checkout" when the user presses the Proceed To Checkout button on the Cart page. See following screenshot:



The Cart has not been programmed to Disable the Add To Cart button on the Product Details module if a Variant is out of Stock.

As a possible solution, you can enable the Wishlist which will allow your customers to add the variant items to the Wishlist for purchase later if they are out of stock.

Hi Kevin

Thanks, the functionality you describe is for the 'Enable Inventory Management on Cart Page' option and is exactly how our site is now working, however we have the 'Enable Inventory Management on Add to Cart' option enabled. So surely these two options are the same? Why would a customer be allowed to go through the whole process of ordering an item only to find out that it is out of stock when they press the 'Proceed to Checkout' button on the cart page?

Please could you explain the difference between these two options and how they should work?

Has this issue been fixed?

When a product has variants, the customer cannot add it on the Product Listings page, they must go to the Product Details page to choose options and add to cart.

It's awkward for the customer, if they then happily add the product to the cart, only to find that it's out of stock.

If they notified that one option was out of stock on the Product Details page, they might choose another option and still make a purchase.

The ability for the inventory management feature to check the quantity on hand for a variant has not yet been programmed for the product details page.
