It looks like my left menu that includes my cart items and categories disappears whenever I hit "Continue Shopping"

Hi Richard,
Which page are you clicking the "Continue Shopping" button? On the Cart Page or the Product Details page?

The reason is because when you click continue shopping you are moving to a different page. when you click continue shopping on the product details module you are moving from the product detail page to a page with the buynow module on it. To fix you would need to add the mini cart module and category menu module to your buynow module page.
