We are struggling with getting accurate shipping returned from UPS. After testing it thoroughly it seems the product dimensions are not being passed to UPS and its just calculating based on weight.

DNN 6.2 and Smith 5.45

To further expand based on our testing:

The only thing UPS gets from the cart is the total weight of all items ordered. This is where it causes issues:

If we have product A and product b and the user orders one of each, but they have to be shipped in two different boxes, the rate returned does not calculate correctly. UPS assumes the items will be shipped in 1 box rather than 2.

How do we on a per product level tell UPS how many quantity wise will fit in 1 box. So if the user orders 6 of Product A, and we have to ship two boxes with 3 each, UPS needs to know this.

How do we tell UPS that every single item is shipped in its own box rather than combined
How do we pass the dimensions of the product to UPS because they charge a handling fee if the dimensions exceed 60 inches in length.

Hi Dustin,

HAve you tried using the "Max PAckage Weight" feature for the Shipping Calculator? For more info about this setting, please see the following link: http://www.smith-consulting.com/Porta...

Regarding Product Dimensions, these are only used for the FedEx Shipping Calculator. If you need to setup up package dimensions for UPS, please see the "Product Packages" submenu option from the Product Setup screen.

To tell UPS that every single item is shipped in its own box rather than combined, you can use the "Number Of Boxes" setting in the Product setup screen.

If you do not see the settings listed above this may be because they were not yet available in the version of the Cart you're currently running.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. However...

The Product Pages sub section under each product where I can set the dimensions does not seem to work. So I create a product package, give it dimensions, weight, etc. however UPS is not getting the info. Any package that is a length over 60" should be getting charged an extra $8.75, but the cart does not add this value. I have do thorough testing and comparisons via UPS's online calculator that match up 100% without the extra fee: https://wwwapps.ups.com/ctc/request?loc=en_US - the cart just isn't taking into consideration these package dimensions. That said, it doesn't seem that the Product Packages configurations is doing anything between the cart and UPS.

Secondly, I have tested as well setting the Number of Boxes. This setting also doesn't seem to do anything. If I set the Number of Boxes to 1 say for Product A and Set it to 1 for Product B and then add each to may cart, the shipping rate returned is the price for 1 box that contains both Product A and Product B but not for two individual boxes.

Third, I have used and tested the Max Package Weight. This is great and does seem to work, however its set for the entire order rather than on an individual product level. If it was set for an individual product level then I believe it would solve all the issues. I could tell Product A that weighs 15 pounds to have a Max Package weight of 15 pounds. So if the user adds a quantity of 2, totaling 30 Pounds, UPS would know that it needs two boxes for this order and then should return the correct shipping rate.

To sum it up:
- Product Packages setting under each product does not seem to work or pass the dimensions
- Number of Boxes does not seem to work or do anything that I can tell.

Id be happy to demo this for you. Again if you go to UPS website to test and then test the cart you will see discrepancies: https://wwwapps.ups.com/ctc/request?loc=en_US

The store is here:
https://www.zillarac.com/Store.aspx

The particular product is the first one Rac Pac that has a dimension of 95" in length that is one of the issues describe above.

Hi Dustin,

Looks like I mixed up which Shipping Carriers use the Product Packages, I just confirmed with programming that FedEx uses the Product Packages, and the Dimensions on the Product Setup screen were originally programmed for UPS however we found that sending Product Dimensions would actually cause more miscalculations rather than just sending the weight to UPS and letting their system calculate the proper rates.

The Number of Boxes field is used only for record keeping and in not currently used in shipping calculations.

The Max Package Weight setting sums up the weight of all the items in the Cart and when the total weight exceeds this maximum, a second (or more) packages are calculated and the cart will create the appropriate number of additional xml sections including the corresponding calculated weights to be passed to the UPS API when calculating shipping cost.

For example, if the total weight of the items in the cart is 350 lbs and max package weight is 150 lbs the cart will calculate number of packages and weight as follows:
  • 350/150 = 2.5 (round up) = 3 packages
  • Package 1 and 2 weight = 150 lbs
  • Package 3 weight = 50 lbs

One possible solution to increase the accuracy of the rates returned from UPS for your larger items may be to increase the weight in the Product Setup screen to supplement the dimensions of the item being shipped.

We are also available to add a Max Package Weight setting at the Product level. If this is something you're interested in, please submit a Quote Request at the following link: http://www.smith-consulting.com/servi...

Sorry for the confusion and hope this clears things up.

Thanks!
